Waste to Energy  Tekes Technology Programme
Contents of programme

puru.gif (32232 bytes)In Finland, about 3 million tonnes of municipal waste a year are generated and roughly the same amount of similar industrial waste. The energy content of these wastes is about 4 Mtoe/a, and most of it is currently disposed in landfills. On the national level, the aim is to promote utilisation of waste, and simultaneously: 1. to prevent the generation of waste 2. to make use of waste in the form of materials and for energy 3. to carry out safe final disposal for unusable waste. Increasing use of waste for energy supports best material recycling, as both modes are based on efficient source-separation and hence, the cost of waste utilisation can be reduced.

Objectives of programme The objectives of the four-year (1998 - 2001)
programme initiated by National Technology Agency of Finland Tekes are to study and develop energy use systems for different waste fractions. The programme is co-ordinated by VTT Processes. The total financing will be FIM 80 - 120 million.
