Information

Since 1991 VTT has developed hybrid media applications, that enhance the properties of print media with electronic media (see history). In February 1997, we patented the basic principle of linking printed and electronic information (FI 105954: Caj Södergård, Christer Bäckström: Menetelmä ja järjestelmä sähköisessä muodossa olevan tiedon liitämiseksi painettuun tietoon). One recent outcome of this research is the so called “smart spot” or “smart code” in Finnish älyruutu or älykoodi. VTT developed this technology in the PrintAccess project.

The PrintAccess software reads two-dimensional codes (Data Matrix) printed on products like newspapers, magazines, posters, catalogues and packages. The software program operates on a mobile phone and uses the integrated camera for reading. The use is very easy, because the program decides by advanced video processing, when the code is ready for capture and then executes the image capturing automatically. After reading, the program brings up the web page or web video that is connected to the code. The variety of possible applications is limitless...

VTT owns the rights the PrintAccess code reading program. It has also patented the methods used in the program:

End-users can download and use the program free. For commercial services using the program, VTT is ready to negotiate about licensing. VTT has already licensed the technology to two companies.

One of the commercial partners providing PrintAccess based services is Upcode and its distributor Morselcode. The Finnish financial newspaper Kauppalehti, the free distribution newspaper Uutislehti 100, the calogue printer Eniro and Soprano's magazines Uusi Toimisto and Kampanja use the Upcode product provided by Upcode. One candidate in the Finnsh president race also uses Upcode in his campaign material. The Upcode reader is based on the PrintAccess technology, but contains addtitional features developed by VTT for UPC.
