VTT Augmented Reality News

Augmented Reality stands for superimposing virtual objects in the users view of the real world, providing novel visualisation technology for a wide range of application areas. The work by VTTs Augmented Reality team dates back to the year 2000, when we started developing virtual advertisements for live TV broadcast and, a little later, games and entertainment applications.

Alvar Time-bomb Removal

As most of you may know, the Alvar libraries have always contained a
time-bomb that rendered them unusable after one year of their release.
Going forward with Alvar 2, this time-bomb will be removed. Since
Alvar 2 has not yet been released and for maximum compatibility with
older projects, we are releasing recompiled versions of Alvar 1
without the time-bomb. These libraries should be source and binary
compatible, meaning that they can be used as drop in replacements.
To obtain these new versions, please make a new download request and
look for the packages labeled "notimebomb".

VTT and Vuzix Deliver Next Generation Augmented Reality for Video Eyewear

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Vuzix Corporation are working
together to bring “first person” Augmented Reality and ALVAR to the next
generation of video eyewear.
VTT and Vuzix Corporation have signed a licensing agreement allowing Vuzix to embed
VTT’s ALVAR Augmented Reality (AR) tracking technology into Vuzix’ augmented
reality authoring software. The cooperation has started with Vuzix launching its first ARenabled
software product, maxReality (TM), which can be used for designing and viewing
AR content viewed through the Vuzix Wrap 920 AR glasses. maxReality is a plugin for
the Autodesk® 3ds Max® product.

VTT in ISMAR 2010

We had two posters in ISMAR 2010: "Sensor Synchronization for AR Applications" by Kantonen,
and "Light-Weight Marker Hiding for Augmented Reality" by Korkalo, Aittala and Siltanen.
The latter of the posters won the best poster award at the conference.
We also participated in the ISMAR tracking competition using client-server solution with
Nokia N900 mobile phone as a client.
With this solution the user can find the tracking targets using only his/her mobile phone.
The phone communicates wirelessly with the tracking server which provides the
client with real-time information to be used in the tracking.
This year the ISMAR organizers decided to share the first price of the tracking competition
		between all participants.
