Probiotic strains with designed health properties

Do you hate getting vaccine injections? The uneasy anticipation of facing a jab in the arm with a sinister looking needle would gratefully be avoided by many of us. For some diseases too, injected vaccines have not yet been developed, and in any case, injections are not always the most efficient or effective way to deliver vaccines. Imagine that you could be immunised simply by eating some yoghurt bacteria that have the vaccine incorporated into them. No nasty needles! Well, within this project precisely this type of vaccine delivery system is being developed for effect against the bacterium Helicobacter pylori which can cause stomach ulcers, and against rotavirus which causes severe diarrhoea, especially in children.

It has already been seen that certain probiotic bacteria can beneficially influence our immune system. In this project, research is also being conducted to determine exactly how they do this so that new probiotics can be found that have specific properties that are beneficial to health. For example, in the chronic intestinal diseases ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease there is severe inflammation of the intestinal tract (hence they are called inflammatory bowel disease or IBD for short). Within this project, probiotic strains will be found and trialed for their ability to prevent this inflammation by regulating the immune system. The aim is to develop new effective treatments for what are debilitating chronic diseases that severely affect the quality of life of those who suffer from them.
